Leakage Study Update

Leakage indicator drilled -- oil discovered    (Dec 2000)

Many examples of leakage indicators were collected during this study and only a small subset was included in the paper. Examples were found both over known accumulations and untested traps.

Woodside Petroleum drilled the Laverda-1 well in October 2000 and discovered oil in what has been described in the newspapers as "Australia's biggest offshore oil deposit for half a decade" (The Australian newspaper, November 1, 2000). The news item also says "The Laverda find suggests an undersea oil field worth a conservative $US1.6 billion ($2.4 billion).

The two Enfield seismic examples included in this paper are probably caused by leakage from the Laverda accumulation. The comment is made in this paper that "Two HRDZs to the west of Enfield-1 described in this paper (Figs 13 and 14) suggest that there may be more discoveries to be made in this region."

Software developments    (Dec 2000)

Signalworks Pty Ltd, ACN 066 681 598, develops geophysical data processing and analysis software and provides data processing services. Software systems developed include the ALF Explorer™ airborne laser fluorosensor (ALF) data analysis system and the Signalworks™ experimental digital signal processing (DSP) system. The Signalworks™ system is being used to prototype a software package to detect subtle leakage indicators using seismic data. The package will use velocity, amplitude and texture changes to detect diagenetic zones caused by hydrocarbon leakage.
