Projects

This page contains links to some geophysical projects I have documented online.

Past Projects:

bullet

Notes on the Nature of Seismic Data Processing in the Frequency Domain

bullet

A Visual Guide to Digital Signal Analysis Principles

(The web pages for the two projects listed above are very popular, with between one and two thousand "hits" per week.)

bullet

Controlling the Surface Ghost Reflection for High Resolution Marine Seismic Imaging

bullet

Marine Seismic Acquisition Modeling Software

bullet

Seismic Acquisition Modeling

bullet

AVO Tools --  Amplitude Versus Offset modeling system  --  Reflectivity variations observed on seismic reflectivity data can be used to indicate the presence of gas in a structure.

bullet

ALF Tools  --  Airborne Laser Fluorescence analysis system  --  an example of using modern PC hardware and software components to rapidly assemble a tailor made geophysical data analysis system.

Current Projects:

bullet

APPEA Paper  --  "Identification and Interpretation of Leakage From Trapped Hydrocarbons on Seismic Data" by Robert Cowley and Geoffrey O'Brien.  --  These pages are currently password protected.

bullet

Geophysical signal analysis components and applications  --  I am designing a set of ActiveX components and dynamic link libraries (DLLs) for use with Visual Basic 6 or Visual C++ 6. These components can be used to rapidly assemble a geophysical signal analysis application. When I get time, I will document these online.

bullet

Projection and datum transformation library  --  this is a DLL written for geophysical mapping applications. There are still some enhancements and testing to be done.

bullet

Mapping Module  --  when the ALF Tools system was written, there were no off-the-shelf mapping components available with all the required functions, so a new mapping module was written. My plan is to convert this module into an ActiveX control so it can be easily added to other applications.

Planned Projects:

bullet

Hydrocarbon Related Diagenetic Zone (HRDZ) detection using seismic stacking or refraction velocities.  --  Research into hydrocarbon leakage indicators in Australia (see APPEA Paper link above) suggests that high velocity alteration zones are very common above hydrocarbon accumulations. The aim of this project is to produce an application that can be used to detect the shallow velocity variations caused by even minor hydrocarbon alteration zones above an accumulation.

bullet

Micro Surveyor 1  --  (Shelved project)  --  This was an investigation into using a model aircraft to acquire aero-magnetic data. A model aircraft with a payload capacity of about 1 kilogram was built and the components for an auto-pilot and data acquisition system were obtained. Currently waiting on improvements in micro-controller performance and availability of flash memory interface components.
